2026-36 SEQ Koala Conservation Strategy
The Queensland Govt Koala Conservation Strategy 2020-25 was launched on 29 August 2020. Through the Strategy, the Queensland Government committed to more strategic and coordinated action and investment in koala conservation across government, research, business and industry, wildlife care, land restoration and community partnerships
The present Qld government are developing a new South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2026–2036 and are now inviting people to have their say.
Click on the links below to find out more about the strategy documents. You can also find a lot of information and examples on the Save the Koalas and Wallabies of White's Hill Facebook page
You can submit via the online form (44 questions) but you will need to register first which is a bit of a hoop to jump through OR
you can email your comments to SEQKoalaStrategy@detsi.qld.gov.au
Our group recently attended a public workshop and are making a group submission. Our submission is included below for your information as well as many of the talking points that came up at the public meeting. Feel free to use it for inspiration but try to mention what is important to you and what personal stories you have to describe the plight of koalas in this area.

The Strategy outlines how the Queensland Government is delivering on the Koala Expert Panel’s six recommendations for the most appropriate and realistic actions to address the decline in koala population densities in SEQ.
The new proposal has some positives but there are also areas that need more scrutiny.
Some land clearing limits have been increased to streamline approval processes???
Whites Hill is not listed as a Koala Priority Area so has reduced protection
Koala corridors are important areas but not identified on koala mapping
These are examples of some of the subjects that came up in the recent workshop.
Protecting and restoring habitat
Greater regulations around development
Develop away from known Koala habitat
Greater oversight on Offset planting - often plantings have poor survival rates
Higher density developments retaining more greenspace
Protect trees lost due to bigger houses - retain a garden??
New legislation allows for more land to be cleared per hectare
More protection for known koala corridors
Make grants available for habitat acquisition and retention
Reducing threats
Reduce speeds, traffic calming, signs, crosses etc in known hot spot areas
Enforce/public awareness/educate dogs on lead in reserves
No dogs loose in back yard at night
Dog training programs??
Over/under passes - monitor their use to inform future plans.
Working together
Increase funding to make RSPCA hotline 24hrs
Provide more support for volunteer organisations.
Network between all volunteer care organisations
Prevent double ups of monitoring apps (Qwildlife app is recommended but iNat already exists and is popular)
Ecotourism (WHR walks!)
Engage the community and educate landholders.
Enhancing monitoring reporting & mapping.
make more mapping publicly available
Update maps more frequently
show fatalities map to indicate hot spots
Use of innovation in conservation (drones)
