We had session #5 of our Junior Bushcare group this morning and we were quite busy.
First up we installed the Frog Sauna down by the pond. This is to help protect frogs from the chytrid fungus that is sweeping across the globe, killing amphibians. In Australia, the fungus has driven some frog species to extinction and is a major threat to the few remaining populations of many other frog species. The fungus can’t tolerate high temperatures, so if we give frogs a place they can stay warm in the winter months, even for a few hours a day, they can survive and recover. As you can see from the pictures, it’s a fairly basic construction. The bricks warm up in the day and create a sanctuary for the frogs.
Gary talked about the cane toad tadpole trap that we will put in the pond in a few months’ time and then we grabbed binoculars and kept our ears and eyes open as we walked around the pond and down along the creek.
We saw a wallaby, a python basking in the sun, ducks, moorhens, an Ibis and an egret hanging out at the pond plus eucalypts and acacias in flower. There were lots of caterpillars determined to climb a tall skinny tree and we were surprised to see termites in a nest we thought was uninhabited. We talked about ferns, cane toads, frogs, she oaks and snake scats. They are much bigger than I expected, about the size of marshmallows (hopefully that doesn't ruin that treat for you).
We finished with morning tea, Phyllis' delicious treats were much appreciated.
