We hosted our 3rd session of our Junior Bushcare on the morning of Friday April 17. This was an opportunity for the kids to do some hands-on planting.
We met up at the children’s playground and John drove the plants & gear over to the Jones roadside, while Heather & Gary walked the six children and two parents through the Reserve.
En route we spotted two koalas and examined some native stingless bees. When we arrived at the creek, John had it all set up for the planting and after a quick demonstration the children, parents and volunteers got right to it.
We had a selection of 24 native plants and chose an area adjacent to the creek near the Jones rd. entrance. Holes were pre dug and we labelled all the plant guards, so we knew what we were planting.
Initially the adults were guiding and offering direction, but before long the children were independently locating and staking their plants. In no time all 24 were in the ground and it was time for a well-earned break.
Ater a pause for morning tea [thanks Phyllis] and the chocolate draw we returned to work to finish off by giving the plants a good watering.
Job complete, Gary bid farewell to John & Heather and walked the remaining volunteers back to the play area.
You can view the plantings down on Philips Creek flats just in from Jones Road.
Our next junior Bushcare will be on Sunday May 31st.
In case you were wondering, as of now, all the plants have survived and are going well 😊
