Plantings on The Ridge 2023 & 2024

Two plantings a year apart

11/21/2024

Council were doing heaps of plantings along the Ridge back in 2022-23 and they asked us if we would like to help out. The offer of pre-dug holes and a Tilkey water tank on site was too good an offer to turn down soo we said yes.

In May 2023 we planted 100 native trees, shrubs and grasses to the right of the Bloodwood track.

In 2024 we were back again planting another 100 natives. The mulch had been down for almost a year and the soil was excellent. At the time we could look across at our previous plantings and have a vision of how this plot might look which was encouraging.

As of November 2024, it's the grasses which have survived best on the 2023 site. The trees have suffered from being nibbled by the wallabies so only a handful have survived on. As we have quite a number of plantings spread around the reserve it's hard to maintain them all. A bit of housekeeping every month would be ideal. Our 2024 area has lost about 20% plantings. Lots of the cardboard covers are no longer in place, either fell off or were removed?? We used bamboo stakes so maybe they just weren't strong enough. Again the grasses are doing well.
